Just a few words (I hope) and some pics (finally)
OK. quickly now, because the screen will go dark in a few moments and i have no two dollar coins left with which to feed this machine.
Here are some long overdue pics from fiji (only 4 - don't get too excited)
a few pics from fiji
I'm now on the West Coast of the South Island of New Zealand. we drove over the southern alps that run down the center of the island today. so we started in gray raininess on the east side and then went through misty weather when we could just see the tips of the snow capped mountains floating above the clouds, over enormous gorges, did a forest walk at the highest point to see some lovely waterfalls in the middle of the moss-covered forest, and then drove down out of the mountains to find blue sky waiting for us on the tropical looking other side. by the way. the southern alps are the Misty Mountains for those in the know. So that'll give you an idea of what they look like. Jordana used 6 rolls of film, i think. and i ran out of both memory space and battery on my camera.
We're staying at a really cool hostel called Global Village with all kinds of african decor, so that's really cozy. we bought a lot of food at the supermarket so we can try to cut costs for the rest of the trip (damn nz is expensive!) and we've been cooking dinner. we had pasta with steamed broccoli & tomatoes and sauteed mushrooms onions & garlic with a light sprinkling of parmesan and some hawaiian salt. Quite delicious, actually. and it's fun cooking in a different kitchen every night. last night our pasta with tuna and spinach was cooked in a japanese-filled ski lodge on the other side of the mountains.
We planned out where we're staying the next few nights, so that's got me a little more at ease. We're gonna do a glacier walk! hooray. and it's not even that expensive! There's a lot to see and a tons of ground to cover in the next week and a half (we fly out a week from tuesday already!), so we're on a tight schedule, i think. i just hope the weather cooperates. apparently this is one of the coldest and strangest summers most kiwis can remember. great.
We're making some progress on getting onward tix from australia, so you don't have to worry, mom.
Now if only we could track nabia's camera down. it got sent back from the crown plaza to golden bay (where we left it) because the person who received it didn't have nabia's name (though everyone else in the entire hotel did), and so now we're trying to track it down and maybe have it sent somewhere else along the way. it's tough to share one camera when we both want to take pictures and there are a million photo opportunities around every corner.
Speaking of photo ops. this place is CRAZY beautiful (and i don't mean that kirsten dunst movie). it's really overwhelming. i've seen so many amazing sights today. pictures don't even begin to do them justice and i can't process all of it. And there's more to come tomorrow. and the day after. and after...
I've got to get some rest. we're off early in the morning, i think. But thanks again to all who wished me a happy birthday (i'll forgive the couple days off - time differences are confounding). and a big HAPPY DAY to emily whose birthday it was there in new york today. and to Jenn whose i missed several days ago.
I wish you all a very kiwi goodnight.

Gee, we're getting awfully competitive here, aren't we? Ok , so mom is NOT first this time!
Everything sounds wonderful- your writing is so beautifully visual and you make me so hungry when you describe your meals....yum, you guys are good cooks! Enjoy the glacier experience- you never cease to amaze me. And probably yourself, as well.
The pictures of your new friends and "family" were great. I hope Nabia gets her camera back soon, and that Jordana buys more film.
Love from your mama
PS I was NOT worried about your ticket plans, just curious, that's all.
No worries, Trudy G. -- as they used to sing in elementary school: first is the worst, second is the best, third is the one with the hairy chest.
And so here I am.
Sorry Emerge. You know I love ya.
The Misty Mountains, eh? A few words of advice: DON'T go through the mines. Just wait for the storm to pass and then go across Caradhras. Saaaaarruuuumaaaaaaahhhhhhn! Isengaaaaaaahd!
I'm sorry. Okay, so that little kid in the first picture is unbearably cute. Good that you're making progress on getting tix from Austrailia, but... have you settled for sure on where the destination will be at that point? Last time I heard this was as up in the air as, well, Nabia's camera. ;)
I'm using smileys now, so I'd better sign off. How can I get you a holiday gift, anyway? I'd better get creative...
Matt
All right. Of all your experiences so far, I am definitely the MOST jealous of the seals. Yup, it's the seals. Everything else tied for a close second.
Love
