on the eve of my departure...
Tomorrow morning we fly to Singapore.
We've spent the week here in Turramurra organizing our pictures (only about 1600 for TWO months this time), our packs (mine's still too heavy), and our thoughts (a tougher job) as we mucked about with the wonderful Stevens family. They were exceedingly generous with their time, rides, and food, not to mention great company. We went for a hike to a lighthouse with Gerry, walked across the Harbour Bridge with Karin, traded music with Matthew, played Guess Who with Claire, and enjoyed Honey's purring profusely. I had a beautiful time. Thanks again if you're reading.
Thoughts about tomorrow:
I could stay in Australia much longer. It's so enormous- there's so much to see. We stayed in the habited areas the whole time - I'd love to get inland a little bit - and not to a tourist hotspot like Uluru - some towns in towards the outback and see how the land and the people change. I'd like to see Western Australia - there's a woman - a Servas host - out there living on an Aboriginal reserve. now THAT would have been an interesting experience... but we spent the time we had here really well, i think. i saw much, met many, and truly enjoyed myself.
singapore: it's only 13 hours ahead of home. and henceforth, we'll just be getting closer. weird. we WERE able to organize a servas host for tomorrow night and the couple of nights following, which quiets my mind a bit. Once there, we'll try and figure out which place comes next. It's exciting. I need to get my hands on a guidebook :). I am NOT, however, looking forward to sitting on a plane for 7 1/2 hours or some such junk tomorrow. eew. and when we arrive it'll only be 1:30 in the afternoon! they better show some good movies.
more on language in Australia: it's not uncommon to hear a comments like the following: "oh, that guy from tripod is as cool as." or "that story's as weird as." among the young people. I wonder what the end of the phrase is. as cool as what? as weird as what? i found it a strange saying. i thought i'd share.
more on me: I sent home my journal today. It was overflowing with cutouts from brochures and things. it was too heavy. not to mention having only a couple more blank pages. so i sent it away in a package (there's your answer mom - it's not a very exciting one - mostly books, but it's on its way). i miss it already. my new one is not orange. it does not have the Human Rights Org equal sign on it. it is a black sketchbook. it will have to do. i will find some stickers to decorate it. and it will be fine. but it will not be orange. and it will not have a big purple sticker with a yellow equal sign on it. it will have its own character. right now, it's pretty plain and morbid. maybe it's a goth journal. hmm...
anyway, if you're bored or interested, here are 81 pictures from australia. Just click "view photos."
and Happy Birthday to my brother Dan. he's old.

Amy.....here goes the end of one part of y'all's (that IS a word here in Texas, so whatever "incorrect grammar/wording" thoughts you were having.....don't!!!) great adventure, and the beginning of a new part. As you write, one can almost "feel" your feelings. I
do have one comment here that's not relevant to your trip, though~~~I have met your brother Dan and....he is not THAT old!!!!!!! (Happy Birthday, Dan!!). I wish you and Nabia a good flight to Singapore and lots of interesting, fun sights, sounds, smells, tastes, people, etc. Sorry you are not able to continue in your ORANGE journal....it's hard to leave an old friend and set up a relationship with a new one, isn't it? (it is for me, anyway). Not much to add. It seems to me that Australia will be a "be-back" for you in the future....so much left to see and do and experience. Thanks for taking us (your readers) along...we "saw" and learned a lot, and met some interesting people along the way, thanks to your generous sharing in this "blog" thing. And now we're off with you to a new place. Happy travels....and a hug. Elaine
The only thing I know about Singapore, really, is that that one American tourist got caned in the early 90's. Here's to you becoming far more knowledgeable and cultured than little provincial me, and also to your avoidance of all such caning.
You played Guess Who? Don't you find that game a bit politically problematic, Ms. Wesleyan?
Happy B-day, Dan!

Oooooohhhh. Goth Amy. Send pictures!
