the wonderful wizard of Oz

ok, so maybe not a wizard.. but Oz at least.

Don't worry, I'm not going to write about everythign that's happened since I wrote last. I'm about to pull an all-nighter, completely unexpectedly, after working all day today and most of yesterday with nabia on organizing our pictures from new zealand. between the two of us, we had over two thousand to sort through. that's right. two thousand. after about a million hours of poring over them, we managed it down to about 1400. that's a lot of deleted pictures. but there are SO many good ones. here's a smattering.

So Sydney's been good, what I've seen of it. In Sydney proper, we've taken buses and trains, a ferry with lovely views, eaten a slightly shmancy dinner over near Manly beach (apparently so named because an english guy saw a bunch of well-muscled aboriginals there and thought them "manly" - no joke), gone to and not had enough time for the Australia Museum, and various other short wanderings. Outside the city boundaries, we've gone on a day trip to the blue mountains, which are cool, but i have to admit that everything nature pales in comparison to new zealand. so we'll see if that remains the case and if i am doomed to be so jaded henceforth. i guess i use words like those at 5:49 in the morning...

Also on our list of things we've done is Featherdale Wildlife Park, which was really fun and we got to pet a koala and feed a kangaroo and i accidentally backed into a baby emu that had sidled up behind me... lots of animals. lots of coolness. so that was good.

We spent about 11 hours in one spot in a park called Mrs Macquaries' Chair, defending our decently-viewed area from intruders until the fabulous new year's fireworks burst up from three locations in the harbor as well as off of the Harbor Bridge. It was really breathtaking. Weird to be in such a huge group of people and only know the two you're with, one from home who happened to spot you quite randomly in the crowd as you eyedropped on signing people's conversations, the Canadian girl sitting on our left with whom we struck up a dialogue, and the Aussie man on your right and his family, with whom you also have chatted for several hours. but there are thousands there. not many to hug. especially in comparison to past years. but it was really beautiful and fun to be part of something so large.

a Happy New Year to all.

We've been staying in the house of a friend of a friend of my dad's and it's been great. The woman is not actually here but has been generous enough to let us stay and use her home - she runs a catering business out of here, so there are fun cookware type things in the kitchen, and some interesting food in the fridge as well (we got a free apple almond pie and raspberry brownies last night from her chef). We've also had use of a computer (hence the possibility of an allnighter) and room to spread out and organize ourselves. which, i think, we have finally just about done. the packages will be sent, the photos are (finally) organized... we're ready to be in australia, i think.

i hear it's unseasonably cold where i'm headed. but i look forward to it anyway. ok. i have to go get ready to take a several-hour bus ride. i plan to sleep the whole thing. especially since i haven't slept since yesterday.

much love and hoping you all got more sleep than i did. i apologize for any incoherence that may have seeped out.

Hi world traveler

The pictures are fantastic! The scenery actually made me gasp several times, and the ones of you girls were terrific. You look wonderful- outdoorsy and happy. And why not! And there are thousands more of these??? Omigod. Sorting through them must have been a humongous job. Can't even imagine.

I'm assuming you're on your way (the bus ride?) to the cottage in Narooma to spend some time with our Aussie friends- that should be relaxing and fun. Give them a big kiss for us, and especially to little Saxon.

Hugs, mom

I think NZ will be in your mind forever. I'm sure you'll be baaaack.
Hope you link up with Fred and Karen.
Enjoying your journal ... and you didn't even say, "G'day, mate!" once.
Happy New Year to you both.

Hey Amy!

Happy New Year! I'm glad you got to see fireworks! I support fireworks! All I got to see was Tom Green kissing someone, and that's really REALLY REALLY not as good.

That photo of the poppy is so pretty I want to wallpaper my house with it.

I've been thinking of you because I got myself Dance Dance Revolution for Christmas, which is insane and addictive, and I would like you to play with me. Unfortunately, it's a long drive. I'll give you a raincheck though. Say hi to all the animals for me!
