updates and responses

namaste, y'all (we've been staying with indian servas hosts a fair bit, so... yeah).

a couple of updates. due to an unexpected and uninvited migraine today for me and a continuing A/C-induced cold for na, we didn't go to meet Mahinth at the oldest food center in singapore for lunch, we didn't walk around the botanical gardens and the orchid house, and we didn't go to little india to get shown around by our previous host Mullai. instead we laid down in our dark room all day until finally getting up around 3:30 for yet another delicious lunch courtesy of Manjusha (aloo gobi- that's cauliflower and potatoes- saag paneer - that's spinach with cheese - dhal - that's lentil soup - rice, and paratha). we finally dressed ourselves about a half hour ago and now nabia is taking a little power nap. we think we might muster the energy to walk down the street. really, we'll both be fine, and we feel horrible that the last two days have been spent virtually completely indoors, but we play with Akaash (who might be the cutest kid ever - he speaks malayalam from southern india along with english - most adorable accent, i tell you. and he loves the lion king. and his train set.) and we chat with Manjusha... i don't know - it's hard to get out. but get out we shall. not sure yet whether we'll take the bus over the border to malaysia tomorrow or saturday - still need to iron that out with manju.

good news: we started our malaria pills! after much deliberation and anxiety for side effects on my part, we just downed them last night with dinner. neither of us seem to be having much reaction, so that's great. the first couple of places we're going in malaysia are very low risk for malaria, so we'll have plenty of time to build up the levels in our system before we're really exposed. so hooray.

responses:
anecdote status: when something wacky happens, i'll happily commit it to post. we've had relatively sane encounters so far, but we're about to enter the lands of great fried spiders and squat toilets, so i'm sure the wackiness is waiting in the wings.

tummy status: digestive system seems to be holding up pretty well. i mean, indian food, thanks to the inimitable emily, was a part of my diet while in new york, so it's not TOO new. and the hainanese chicken rice is so simple - i think you'd actually like it, mom.

wallet status: singapore dollar is worth about sixty cents US. While that's certainly comparatively cheap, it's about to get much cheaper. so the clothes and things are not THAT great for deals. we'll just get what we need to cover our arms and legs in malaysia (it's a muslim country and we don't want to be inappropriate - plus it's good mosquito protection) and try to do most of our shopping once it gets ubercheap. which will be soon. still, we DO have meals for 2 or 3 Singapore dollars. so that's great.

elevator urination status: apPARently, some lifts are outfitted with urine-sniffers and they will actually trap the pee-er in the elevator and call the police. ouch. talk about being caught with your pants down...

dessert status: i'll work on it heid.

sticker status: thanks for the offer, emerge. i'll let you know when the next poste restante address will be. we have to figure out our itinerary a bit more first. but hey - can those of you still in NYC start looking for a couple of good postcards for me? the ones i have are ok, but i want some more to show people my city.

and with that, i bid you adieu.

What's with the migraine?? Yuk. It's been a long time since that happened, but at least you probably knew what it was this time. Hope it was short-lived, and I hope Na's cold is over quickly too.
Akaash sounds so cute, I can just hear his cute little accent! Make sure there's a picture. The family again seems wonderful. Don't feel bad that you spent a little time hanging out, that's ok too. You can't rush around learning and exploring ALL the time. It will make you nuts.

I loved all the status updates- now we know it all!

Feel better- be in touch from Malaysia, please.
much love,
mom

ACT III

(A small spotlight trains on SMARMY THE SPIDER as he scuttles across the stage. AMY is still in her stool in the darkness, frozen, with little bits of kangaroo fur on her bib. SMARMY sings.)

SMARMY
Oh, I'm a spider from the outback
I don't need no water spout-back
Yes I'm a spider from the outback
It's not a steakhouse, it's --

AMY
Hello, Smarmy.

SMARMY
(jumping back)
Huh?! What -- is that... you, Hoppity?

AMY
Smarmy, I've been taking these lovely pills.

SMARMY
No Amy, not again --

AMY
I need them to go to Malaysia. But they make me SO hungry.

SMARMY
What -- what are you talking about? Amy, what are you DOING?! NO! AAaaaggh!

(This joke will stop being funny to me... um... never. Answer my e-mail! -MMS)
