let it be known
to those of you who have written me and not yet received replies. know that i am wanting terribly to write back to you but this internet cafe does not allow me to access my gmail account and yahoo drives me bonkers. as soon as i can get in to that account, i am going to find time to sit and write and write. i want to do that. i will. please don't hate me while you wait.
in other news, we saw borobudur this morning - beeeeautiful. we stayed there last night so we could see it in early morning - nice and cool (read: not deathly hot like usual), volcanoes and mountains fading in slowly as the sun burned the mist off, huge domes of grey stone stupa lined up in circles, seven tiers of relief carvings depicting the life of buddha and the quest for enlightenment (the top is nirvana - perfection - no carvings because no one knows the story up there). coolness. punctuated by lots and lots of schoolkids in orange and white matching outfits asking if they can take pictures with any white person around. sometimes not asking, just sitting and snapping away. then definitely shaking hands afterwards - that's important. cute and only slightly distracting.
we're off to solo tomorrow - batik center of indonesia. and that's a lot of batik. we're going to take a class there and hopefully make something presentable. i heard it's hard - wax everywhere. should be fun :) sadly though, we part ways with tammy and kelly for a few days. they're going to stay here in yogya and then meet up with us again for our flight out of this country and to KL. then we all spend the night in the airport and fly to our respective destinations in the morning.
i counted: i have 28 bites on my left hand and arm, 21 on the right, and a whopping 35 on my face and neck! itchy, but no other side effects. i just look like i have acne.
ok. i'm off. love!

the temple sounds awesome- hard to believe it was built back in the 8th-9th century!(see, I do my homework) And Solo sounds cool too, just what you'll enjoy- in the guide books but not very popular with tourists for some reason, so you'll love it! And make something beautiful with the batik!
I hope the "acne" condition is not too itchy, and goes away quickly. Glad there's no other side effects.
Very warm here today- ridiculous- in the 80's, but then it's getting a bit cooler again, where it should be in April. We miss you!!
Noone will hate you if you can't write back, they just miss you too!!
Love, mom
Great to read you again after being away in Canada and not having real computer access. Remember Yasmina ....??? We were with her and her family.
I used to make batiks; I taught myself, so nothing like what you are going to be able to do. But I loved it.
Enjoy and repel those biting beasties. When are you heading to KL?
Love Barbara
Ok, so I am sitting here at work so transfixed by the last like 8 entries of your blog, and I am SOOOO impressed by your travels and your courage and all that you've seen. (I should be working) I studied kecak and gamelan in my Asian music class (the TA was from Wesleyan) and saw a whole video on it. I would have loved to have seen it! As for the food...well...not that I don't get enough (Roti Roll just opened on our corner), but I am jealous and fascinated that you are getting the real thing!. So, here is my plan. You return from your trip and become a travel writer. I will be your recipe tester and we will contribute stories to magazines and write books and stuff (maybe Jenn or Evan will produce our TV show) . Either that or we open a spa where you take care of the physical wellness part, and I take care of the food part. We hire a yoga instructor and we're all set. I miss you!
Love,
Em
ok, this comment is for all of Amy's friends, not necessarily for Amy.
I love that you write, I love WHAT you write.
You all make me smile. Thank you.
