yoohoo from uluru

this'll be superquick because it's superexpensive to have internet here.

sorry i never finished my last post - i got involved in conversation and cranium-playing with the family in melbourne, and i never got around to typing out the rest of everything. i won't do it now either (you'll just have to wait), as it's $12/hr here and i'm not willing to spend very much. so i'll keep it short. for real this time.

i'm at uluru (aka ayer's rock) just southwest of the center of australia. we've been here in the hotness for the past 3 days and we've really enjoyed it so far. it's super hot (up around 100) but dry, so there's not the breathing trouble and stickiness that comes with heat and humidity. we've been taking it slow, doing only one thing each day, and we leave tomorrow afternoon. so far we've seen 2 sunsets and 1 sunrise (one of each was with a tour group called anangu tours - an aboriginal -run company- VERY cool, much to tell). Last night we got treated to gelato and to dinner by a lovely couple from missouri that we met here, and actually used their free breakfast voucher this morning as well (they were leaving for the airport). we were supposed to go on a sunrise tour to kata tjuta (aka the olgas) this morning at 5:15, but we were up until 2:30 signing by the pool with the swedish girl who studied in london and the british guy who is half punjabi. British sign is confusing - so many things are reversed! anyway, we moved our sunrise to tomorrow and we'll spend today journaling and chilling out and seeing if the clouds overhead that keep threatening to storm make good. i think it'd be amazing to see a storm out here and so i hope it does.

we're off to cairns tomorrow, where i hear the weather is humid and rainy and full of cyclones, so we shall see how that progresses. we may be extending our departure date once again from oz if it's taking us longer to make it down the (very long) east coast to sydney.

oh. and i tried a bit of kangaroo last night, after much deliberation. it was in a smokey mountain glaze and it tasted like roast beef. and now i don't need to eat it again cuz i already did it :).

cheers and g'day, and hopefully i'll write a long one to catch you all up on everything once we get to cairns ("cans").

much love,
amy

(Lights up on Amy, sitting on a stool center-stage.)

AMY
Oh, hello. I'm Amy.

(A strange noise -- like something bouncing -- is heard offstage. Coming closer. Amy turns. Suddenly, HOPPITY THE KANGAROO enters stage-left.)

HOPPITY
(laughs) Well hey kids! I'm Hoppity the Kangaroo!

AMY
Hiya Hoppity! What are we going to learn about today?

HOPPITY
Well let me look into my pouch and see -- ah! Today is "Love Your Fellow Australian Creatures" Day! Hey Amy!

AMY
Yes, Hoppity?

HOPPITY
How do you show love for Australian creatures?
Amy?
Amy, what are you doing --
AMY?! Wait -- aaaaarghahagh!

ok, this is the mom. Will the person who wrote the second comment please own up to your identity!! What's a mother to think?!

By the way, sweetie, while you're suffering with temps around 100 degrees, we're hovering at 2 degrees this morning! It's so cold- one doesn't really get used to it. So enjoy the warmth.

Everything sounds wonderful, and we're all as eager as you for cheap internet access(hopefully soon)....I'm feeling deprived of your long, newsy, educational and entertaining entries. I'm glad you can take your time tooling around the beauty of Australia- sounds good to me! (Except for the cyclones? in Cairns.) But that's the joy of flexible travel plans.

You were brave to try the kangeroo. Now that pressure is over.
Lots of love to you both,
mom

I could not do the Kangaroo (too red), but I did try the Emu sausages which tasted kinda like regular sausage. Did you do the barbeque at the Outback Lodge and did you cook it on the grill? Sounded like a good idea when I tried it - but not so pleasant to be near that heat in such hot weather.

Not mention of flies - that is a very good sign.

You will find much better internet rates in Cairns - I promise. Say hello to the fishes in the Great Barrier Reef - you will REALLY REALLY enjoy that!
